UN:Me: An Psychological Thriller That Blends Survival Horror with Among Us Gameplay

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"This is a unique game where a girl containing multiple personalities inside her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.

Stepping Into a Shattered Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed heroine seeming to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own anxieties and motivations. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her suddenly.

Judging by revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though additional clips depict the main character navigating a desolate church.

A World of Individual Dread

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to others can activate a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — fears that are specific to every individual."

The core gameplay loop involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given moment. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. During exploration, each soul's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the specific fear the player encounters.

Eerie Aesthetics and a Deadly Decision

At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The setting is populated by nurses all sporting the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the lobby have large flowers where their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body belongs to them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is real."

Once players have deduced a persona is an impostor, they are forced to destroy it. However, because every entity can deceive or hide the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] with your own hands," a voice suggests. "The final entity remaining might be a fake. In any case, your choices are irreversible."

UN:Me does not yet have a confirmed launch window, but it is available to wishlist on digital storefronts.
