Both ships named Friendship and Tigger Moth set off from Isla Mujeres, Mexico on the 20th of March.

A extensive search and recovery effort is presently under way in the Caribbean waters for two missing boats loaded with humanitarian supplies traveling from the Mexican coast to the island of Cuba.

Maritime Rescue Missions Deployed

Authorities in Mexico has dispatched naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to locate the missing boats, which were transporting no fewer than nine crew members, according to a navy statement.

The vessels had been projected to make landfall in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been no communication from them and zero verification of their docking, the statement clarified.

Background of Aid to the Island

The Caribbean nation has relied heavily on Mexico's over recent weeks, as the country endures widespread nationwide blackouts.

"Both captains and crews are experienced sailors, and both vessels are outfitted with proper navigational gear and signalling equipment," a representative for the convoy said.

The nine individuals on board are nationals of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has been in touch with coast guard agencies from the involved countries along with their embassy officials.

"The group is working closely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the spokesperson added.

Recent Relief Delivery

Just days before, the government in Havana widely celebrated and greeted with fanfare a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tons of donated goods to the island.

That ship, nicknamed "a new Granma" after the vessel in which Castro landed in Cuba to start the armed struggle in the mid-20th century, carried solar equipment, medicines, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Wider Geopolitical Climate

Non-governmental organizations and volunteers have largely spearheaded initiatives to deliver critical assistance to Cuba beginning in January, when a oil sanctions on the country began.

International organizations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 surgical procedures cancelled in Cuba due to power shortages.

Political tensions have intensified over the past months, with statements from several representatives underscoring the delicate situation regarding diplomatic ties.

Responding to certain statements, a senior government figure declared that "the socialist system of Cuba is not up for negotiation."

Accounts suggest that preliminary steps of negotiations were initiated, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces stated it was committed to using every available asset at its reach to discover the sailboats and guarantee the safety of the people on board.

To date, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
