While perhaps not at the equivalent scale as granting clemency to holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“The swine has done no wrong. She deserves this act of mercy. She has committed zero crimes,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the commencement of a second term in office.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence without fear.”
This ceremony, which both honors and questions the region’s Hispanic tradition of feasting on pork during the holidays, was created to mirror the traditional fowl clemency at the White House.
The animal, provided by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – deriving from a rap song lyric – often seemingly at random. The phrase became so ubiquitous that a leading lexicon site recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a countryside refuge “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“This swine clemency has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It captures the spirit of Miami: joyful, varied, and rooted in traditions that bring people together. Each year, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and Cuban coffee as they toasted the swine's new lease on life.
