The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's Real Threat: Economic Stagnation.

The recent US security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The true danger facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

The Stark Growth Divide Between Europe and the US

Statistics reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, compared to a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: A Critical Problem

This widening disparity is driven by stronger efficiency gains in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly US-centric. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity prompts a pressing question: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is Europe stand? Most analysts concede it is essentially a contest between two between the United States and China, with European nations starting at a significant handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe has yet to establish a genuine unified investment market, which caps the scale of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper European business. A US startup can introduce a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 different national regimes, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Attitudes toward risk-taking differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was historically met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its capacity for pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for hope. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance serious reform. Notable reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if Europe does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a critical moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". So far, Europe's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible loss of global economic relevance.
