The long-awaited slasher sequel Scream 7 is scheduled to debut in theaters in the coming year, and it is gearing up for a major family reunion. This latest installment marks the iconic return of Neve Campbell as survivor Sidney Prescott, after sitting out the previous film. She will, as usual, be joined by Courtney Cox as journalist Gail Weathers, but they aren't the only beloved characters making a comeback.
"Returning to a role you played in your mid-20s when you're 55 was a challenge that gave me sleepless nights," Lillard reveals.
It has been established that three distinct characters from earlier films are set to return in this new outing, despite dying in prior movies. The precise method of their resurrection is still unclear. Fans should prepare for the return of the beloved and seemingly immortal officer Dewey Riley, the director and third film antagonist Roman Bridger, and a member of the first film's murderous duo, Stu Macher.
For Matthew Lillard, returning to the franchise for the first occasion since a brief appearance is a long-held wish, though he is terrified about the audience response. The performer clearly remembers the precise instant he got the news from the original writer.
"I recall the conversation. I remember the pleasantries. I recall him asking. That instance is permanently etched on my psyche," he states. "So I'm really proud to be back. I'm thrilled to be back."
Stu Macher has attained cult status in the years since the original film was released, which made Lillard feeling quite nervous.
"Truthfully, that's a role that is infamous, like it or not," he notes. "A character that is now represented in every single Ghostface mask that appears every Halloween."
Now that filming has concluded, Lillard is in the same position as everyone else to see the finished film. He confesses to feeling significant anxiety about hoping not to be the one who ruins the beloved franchise.
"It's either a success and people are thrilled to have you, or it's a miss," Lillard observes. "Going into it, I have no idea if the film will be successful. I don't know if people are eager to see me. I've certainly seen plenty of people state and say, 'Stu is dead. Why are they going back to this trope?' So the truth is that I feel a lot of pressure to not ruin the franchise. I hope people exiting Scream 7 and saying, 'Well, that sucked, and Matthew Lillard was the cause.'"
While many longtime fans are excited for Stu's return, the central mystery of how he and the others return remains. Perhaps they live rent-free in Sidney's consciousness, like a prior storyline. Alternatively, perhaps they are in some way all alive in a bizarre shared scenario. The possibility of a self-referential narrative, inspired by earlier genre films, also exists.
Moviegoers will find out the answer when Scream 7 arrives in theaters.
