New Year Celebrants Advised to Wrap Up Warm with Snowfall Forecast Across the UK

Weather experts have indicated an icy beginning to the new year, with snow expected across much of the UK. Revelers are being urged to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Continue Amid Forecasts

The Scottish capital's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's cancellation. This is in spite of advisories for snow across northern Scotland.

"A cold New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so additional clothing will be needed," said the Met Office.

Displays Under Open but Frosty Skies

Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is likely to be perfect for fireworks displays, with no rain and good visibility. The mercury are forecast to be low, so extra layers vital, as per forecasters.

Further north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is not expected to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.

Extensive Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, snow alerts have been issued across Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

The Mercury Expected to Fall Further

Going into the new year, it will be "cold regardless of where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. Conditions are set to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to hit the north of the country.

Around 10cm of snow could accumulate to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.

Public Health Advisories Activated

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to stay active until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency said this meant the weather was likely to lead to major effects across health and social care services. This encompasses a potential rise in the fatality numbers among those with health conditions or those in the older age groups.
