More than 50 Child Refugee Children Remain Unaccounted For Following Vanishing from Care in UK

In excess of 50 lone child asylum seekers who went missing not long after arriving the UK and while in the care of government agencies are yet to be found, according to figures obtained.

Many of the unaccounted minors entered in dinghies or hidden in the rear compartments of lorries and are thought to have been taken by traffickers. A specific county is often the location where they first land.

Government Figures Indicates Concerning Statistics

Disclosed information has registered 345 children vanishing from the region, with 56 of those still missing.

Between 2021 and 2023, when temporary accommodations for children were run combined with other sites in other areas, 132 children vanished from those two hotels. Of these, 108 were later found but 24 are remain unaccounted for.

Between 2020 and August 2025, 213 children went missing from welcome hubs for this group, with 182 found and 32 yet to be accounted for.

Origin Statistics of Missing Children

In each instance, minors from Albania were the biggest contingent to disappear, accounting for 50% the overall number from the hotels, 68, and in excess of one-fourth from the welcome hubs, 65.

The subsequent biggest ethnic groups to have gone missing from both places are individuals from Afghanistan subsequently people from Iran.

Policy Shifts and Ongoing Concerns

In late 2023, subsequent to a protracted judicial process concerning solitary migrant children disappearing from all hotels, the custom of routinely accommodating children in hotels was declared illegal.

Authorities also direct children to processes and support networks to help mitigate the threat of mistreatment in the UK, including the national referral mechanism and the Independent Child Trafficking Guardian Service. "Nonetheless it is problematic to halt all children from going missing."

Another spokesperson said: "The protection and well-being of solitary refugee minors continues to be crucial, and we take children vanishing extremely seriously. We continue to periodically examine our systems for new information if this takes place, distributing pertinent data with regional law enforcement and district officials looking into the situation."
