Liverpool's Captain Admits Squad Faces Crisis, Questions Teammates on Responsibility

The Liverpool skipper has issued a blunt assessment of the club's woeful championship campaign, confessing the title holders are in disarray and failing head coach Slot while questioning whether all squad members is taking responsibility for the team’s slump.

Van Dijk typically addresses the press after a match as part of his role as Liverpool captain. Saturday was different, however. His voice was more forceful – audible enough that any teammate in the Anfield tunnel could listen in – and he expressed visible fury while challenging the squad to react. “Anger is justified,” he insisted. “The main thing for me is that everyone has to be accountable.” When questioned whether this is occurring, he replied: “I don’t know. But it's essential. It’s the main thing I want the players to do. It’s not easy during tough periods but we must act if we aim to recover of this.”

Summer Signings and Team Problems

Liverpool spent almost £450 million to replenish a title-winning squad in the summer but have gone backwards, with several high-profile signings struggling to contribute so far. Van Dijk insisted that Liverpool’s issues go beyond the recent additions. “It's difficult for everyone,” he said. “My expectation is for everyone to be answerable on the field. We have to do that in order to motivate one another, to make each other better. If a teammate presses, you must join the effort. It’s basic things but they're lacking enough.”

Call for Unity

Van Dijk continued: “This season we lack any consistency, we allow far too many goals, we are being out-fought and all share the blame for it and I hope this is recognized. We have to accept duty to reverse the situation and it is easy to assign blame but you have to do it together. Past successes were collective and won the league and everyone was part of it, and when you go through a challenging phase you must remain united and not point fingers.

“Show character and confront the hardship and go again, again and again because surrendering is not an option then you are in the wrong environment in my eyes, because this club has been enduring numerous challenges over those years and we’ve always come out of it. However, that doesn't imply it is straightforward, it’s tiring but there is no other way.”

Looking Ahead

Next up in the domestic league is a trip to West Ham next weekend, after the midweek visit of PSV in the European competition. He said: “Wednesday is another opportunity so what am I going to do, dwell on the loss? Certainly not, I'll return and try to think how we can turn this around and I trust that is the collective focus as well.”
