Jets Head Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Shooting

New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and believes the athlete will be OK after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.

Glenn described that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “upbeat” during their latest talk.

“That gives me comfort, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they are holding up and he will walk away from this just fine.”

Glenn was unsure when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.

“Not certain at the moment,” he added. “But I will say this, hearing him speak, he felt really upbeat. Once more, that puts my mind at ease, given his positive frame of mind and he expresses himself so positively.”

Authorities shared security footage Monday of an individual wanted in the attack on the player. What prompted the attack is currently under review and authorities said it is unknown if Boyd was targeted. There were no additional victims were reported.

The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning about halfway between MSG and the iconic square. Boyd, in his late twenties, was transported to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.

Glenn shared Boyd has occupied his thinking “a ton” since learning of the incident. He further stated that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a baby.

“What immediately crossed my mind, he has a new baby,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There’s a process to this, I’ll keep private, but I’m happy at the fact that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”

Boyd did not participate this season, after joining the team, after being placed on injured reserve on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.

He joined the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in March and was expected to be a key part of an improved special teams group under Glenn and special teams coordinator Chris Banjo. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on early August and was taken away on a cart.

Boyd has remained around the team during the entire campaign while recovering from the shoulder injury.

“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he comes to the games all the time. He’s fully engaged. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”

Boyd, from Texas, began his career with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by the Vikings out of the University of Texas in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in last year and moved to Houston’s squad subsequently. Boyd agreed to a one-year deal worth $1.6m with the Jets in the spring.
