Information Available About the Fatalities of the Bondi Terror Attack

No fewer than 16 individuals were killed and more than 40 were hurt when attackers fired on a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, a tragedy local police are describing as a act of terrorism.

According to the most recent information, officials have stated the death toll remains at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Furthermore, 42 injured people were taken to the hospital.

Those who died are yet to be formally identified, but investigators think their ages span from 10 and 87 years of age.

Listed are the victims who have been identified at this time.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first victim to be named.

Known as a father of five children, he served as the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, have his life ended in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She described the events before the shooting, explaining they were standing when the shooting erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having faced unspeakable terror in their youth. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France shared the grief of his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a fresh and tragic example of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the statement read.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

A national of Israel was a fatality in the incident, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

Of the 42 people transported to hospital, a significant number remain under care, with a number in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

One of the injured is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. Sources state he was wounded and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “stroke of luck” he survived.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He said he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“I thought it was something less lethal, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
