Fury Surges as Trump's Post on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Widespread Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the political aisle and the Hollywood industry are coming together to condemn Donald Trump for his statements following the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

An Inflammatory Social Media Post

After the couple were found deceased at their Los Angeles residence, Trump took to his platform to label the deceased director as "tortured and struggling". In a post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his massive, relentless, and untreatable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's alleged "raging obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump described as the "Golden Age of America".

Law Enforcement Developments and Arrest

Police have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bail was set at a significant amount.

A Wave of Condemnation from Celebrities and Politicians

The reaction to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” remarked public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Media personality Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly condemned the statements. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no decency? Is it possible to get any lower?"

The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply stated, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost said, "He is a contemptible piece of trash."

Senator Chris Murphy added, "He's just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own demise because they opposed him. So sick."

Rebuke from Within Party

Some Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about political feuds or political enemies". She also mentioned challenges with substance abuse and psychological well-being within families.

Fellow GOP congressman, Thomas Massie, called Trump's discourse "inappropriate and disgraceful" given the nature of the deaths. He publicly challenged members in his party to justify the statements.

Reiner's History and Stance on Trump

Rob Reiner was long a outspoken detractor of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner said. "Should the United States fall, there’s a danger that democracy crumble around the world."

Despite his pointed criticisms, Reiner had in the past shown "complete revulsion" and condemned violence for political ends without reservation following the shooting of another individual.

A Notable Connection: The Art of the Deal

Providing a layer of historical connection, Michele Reiner, formerly Michele Singer, was the photographer who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "special hairspray" as being photographed on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
