Eric Adams Will Support Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in NYC Mayoral Race

NYC's current mayor Eric Adams declared his intention to endorse Andrew Cuomo in the upcoming mayoral race, despite months of public tension between the two Democratic figures.

An Unexpected Turnaround After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, Adams had lashed out at the former governor, labeling him a “snake and a untruthful person” and alleging of having “a history of marginalizing Black political contenders.” Nonetheless, in a new development, Adams reversed course, revealing he now plans to appear with Cuomo in neighborhoods where he maintains significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the Black and brown communities that have been affected by urban displacement on how critical this election is,” Adams commented.

The mayor further explained, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise due to neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those neighborhoods, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with organizers and groups and I’m going to walk with the former governor in those areas and get them motivated.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The mayoral contest has so far been shaped by the competition between Cuomo and progressive candidate his main rival, whose increasing popularity has attracted attention globally and symbolized hopes for a rejuvenated leftwing of the Democrats.

During a recent candidate forum, both the democratic socialist and GOP candidate his conservative opponent declared they would decline the mayor's support if offered.

Earlier this year, Adams had begun his bid for another term as an unaffiliated candidate after facing federal corruption charges which were later dismissed in exchange for his assistance with government enforcement actions across the city.

During a separate media briefing on the same day, the mayor responded to journalists inquiring into the support announcement by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew later today.”

This development followed a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the New York Knicks’ season opener at Madison Square Garden, which took place right after a heated mayoral debate.
