Detonations and Low-Flying Aircraft Reported in Venezuelan Capital Caracas City

Accounts emerged of multiple explosions and the roar of low-flying jets in the Venezuelan capital in the small hours of the weekend. This situation has led to claims from the Venezuelan government and demands for international intervention.

Venezuela Accuses US of Military Action

The authoritarian government has accused the United States of an act of "imperial aggression," alleging that former President Donald Trump allegedly ordered strikes against the Latin American nation. In an formal announcement, the government confirmed that strikes had impacted the capital and three other states: Miranda state, La Guaira, and Aragua state.

"The sole aim of these strikes is to gain control of Venezuela's key assets, especially its crude oil and mineral wealth," the government asserted.

Caracas urged the international community to denounce the strikes, which it labeled a "clear infringement of international norms" that put numerous of lives at risk in danger.

Accounts of Explosions and Defense Bases Hit

Eyewitnesses reported hearing at least multiple detonations around 2:00 AM local time. People in several areas allegedly ran into the open.

"The whole ground shook. This is frightening. We heard explosions and aircraft in the sky," commented one witness.

Smoke was reported pouring from major military installations in the city: the La Carlota airfield and the Fuerte Tiuna base compound, where leader Maduro is believed to reside.

Regional Reaction

The leader of neighboring Colombia, claimed on a social platform that "Currently they are bombing Caracas... bombing it with projectiles." He demanded an immediate emergency meeting of the Security Council.

The Colombian government, which recently became a member of the Security Council, announced it would activate defense measures at its border with Venezuela.

Preceding Events

These alleged attacks follow a prolonged military buildup by the United States against the Maduro government. Since last summer, there has been a substantial American military buildup off the country's Caribbean coast and a number of air strikes on ships accused of narco-trafficking.

Venezuela's government has stated "the implementation of external threat" and ordered all national defense plans to be initiated. It has also called on its supporters to take to the streets and "denounce this imperialist act."

The White House and the US Department of Defense have not immediately addressed inquiries for a statement regarding the reports.
