Child of Former South African Leader Zuma Denies Terror-Related Charges as Court Case Starts

The child of previous South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has pleaded not guilty to terrorism-related charges at the start of her legal proceedings in the port city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she made on digital networks four years ago during fatal demonstrations in South Africa that came after the detention of her parent.

A week of anarchy in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including looting and fire-setting, left at least 300 individuals dead and led to damage worth an approximate $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).

She has been accused of fuelling this turmoil and faces charges of encouragement to commit terror-related activities and public disorder.

History of the Legal Matter

The unrest were centered in the areas of Gauteng region and KZN and were triggered by the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a court order to testify at an investigation into claims of graft while he was serving as president.

Ms Zuma-Sambudla has repeatedly denied the charges against her, with her legal representative in the past labelling the government's legal argument as unsubstantiated.

She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an bid to settle political disputes with her dad after he established his own political organization and ran against the ANC.

Backing and Legal Defense

This was supported by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which stated the case was an "abuse of power" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and kinship targeting" against the ex-leader and his family.

A small number of backers from her political organization, uMkhonto weSizwe, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her dad and other organization officials attended the court sessions inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks concrete evidence for a criminal finding.
