Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at the age of 80.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and dramatic aesthetics, including the pastel suits that appeared in the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement on social media."
Price's death comes just weeks after he debuted his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.
Shortly after his graduation, he commenced his career designing menswear at Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
A key creative partner of David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "one-of-a-kind talent," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.
During the nineties, he began working on outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price presented his final runway show in London recently in conjunction with the design house 16Arlington.
Design circles says farewell to a true visionary whose influence on style and culture remains indelibly etched.
